Andrew and Clive Wreathall are third generation turkey farmers on their family-run 1,200 hectare farm, on Romney Marsh, Appledore in Kent. They continue to rear their award-winning turkeys with the same traditional and attentive methods as their Grandfather did just before the second world war, adding free-range geese to the farm in 2019. Read on to find out more about Andrew and Appledore Turkeys…

Which year did you become an accredited Golden Turkey Farmer – and start producing Golden Turkeys for Christmas?

Clive and I started rearing and producing turkeys to the Golden Turkey Quality Assurance standard in 1995.

How long have you been a farmer / in farming?

We have been farming on Crown Estate farmland on Romney Marsh since 1979.
Our Grandfather Frank Wreathall started rearing turkeys in 1940, we still rear and produce them with the same traditional and cottage-industry methods, as he did then.

Do you produce anything else on your farm?

We farm around 3,000 acres of Arable growing winter and spring wheat, winter and spring barley, oilseed rape and dried peas for canning. We also are engaged in some letting and developing of property.

What do you do in the first 6 months of the year, when not producing turkeys?

In a normal times we like to go skiing and like to relax and plan for the year ahead.

Have you won any Awards for farming, food or your business?

We’re proud of our successes in the annual Guild of Speciality Foods Great Taste Awards – widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers in the UK.
Appledore Turkeys have received Great Taste Awards every year since 2013 for their turkey products – including one-star Great Taste Awards for our Free-Range Bronze Turkey and our Turkey Crown last year! These awards are a signpost to a wonderful tasting product.

Apart from selling direct to customers – who else do you supply Golden Turkeys to?

We sell our Christmas turkeys direct to customers for collection at the farm gate, (we don’t offer nationwide delivery). However, we do supply to a number of high quality butchers and farm shops across the country.
We also supply Christmas turkeys to companies as part of their staff Christmas boxes and a few top restaurants including Roux at the Landau, at The Langham Hotel.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the buzz of selling a great product direct to the end producer, and creating our own marketing and branding. Customer feedback is also great motivator.

What or who, inspires you?

I’m inspired by anyone who creates a great brand.

What was your first job?

I started training to be an accountant before I became a farmer.

What would you be doing, if you weren’t a farmer?

I’d love to be Formula 1 driver or a helicopter pilot!
