Out and About Poultry
About The Farm
We are a small family run holding on the Herefordshire / Powys border.
We moved into our three-acre smallholding in 2010 with a vision of doing something constructive with the ground. We weren’t actual farmers before we began, we just liked the idea of self-sufficiency and hobby farming. First came the laying hens which were kindly left by the previous owners, then some cob chickens for the table. We fancied a seasonal hobby, so in 2012, whilst heavily pregnant with our first baby, I took the arrival of our first ten turkeys. Little did we know at the time, but that was the start of something special. This hobby and love of the outdoors flourished into a small family run business; Out & About Poultry had begun…
We started in 2012 with 10 turkeys and now have a flock of over 200 birds. We rear and prepare all our birds on site to the highest welfare standards as we believe happy birds make tasty birds. Our turkeys range in our long grassy meadows, our geese are grazed on our clover rich field with access to a brook and the chickens roam the orchard. Our birds frequently dine on apples, damsons, plums and pears from our orchard and we believe this is the secret to their superior flavour.
Our birds range freely as soon as they are fully feathered and mature enough. The way we rear our birds allows them to display natural behaviours from sunrise to sunset. All our birds are slow grown, reaching full maturity. This means our birds are slaughtered when they are ready as opposed to when they are heavy enough.
Our birds are slaughtered on site, one at a time in a stress-free environment. They are then dry feathered by hand and game hung for up to ten days before being prepared and packaged.
All our birds are ready for collection from the farm gate on the 23rd-24th of December.
