Planning ahead after a Successful 2020
Although our accredited farmers had a challenging year during 2020, dealing with the Covid pandemic, our traditional family farms were extremely busy and successful with sales of their slow grown, artisan-matured, free-range Golden Turkeys® for Christmas – with some also receiving Great Taste awards along the way!
Our UK member farmers all produce to our traditional Golden Turkey Quality Assurance code – as part of this our farmers place their orders in March and April, choosing from a range of strains of young turkey poults, (with varying finish weights) which they receive and slow grow from early summer. Many farmers had already made their orders to specialist hatcheries by the time the first national lockdown of Covid took place, not knowing what lay ahead and what effect this would have on both sales and the busy production period in the run up to Christmas Day.
Our farming friends run a wide range of different farms across the UK, with one common passion – to rear to best welfare standards naturally, free-range and slow grown to full maturity, dry plucked and game hung for exceptional flavour and succulent texture.
The pandemic provided many challenges and concerns in the months leading up to the festive season – so to receive the excellent news of our members success in the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards for 2020 was very welcome news!
Both Ledmacoy Turkeys in Aberdeenshire and Starveall Turkeys in Buckinghamshire were delighted to receive 2 star Great Taste Awards for their whole turkeys, especially with Ledmacoy being relative newcomers to turkey farming and to our traditional Golden Turkey Quality Assurance code!
The Great Taste Award judges had glowing praise for the quality of the whole birds, the fine rich flavour and succulent texture.
We’ve had a fantastic result from 2020’s Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards – with the further Golden Turkey accredited farmers receiving 1 star Great Taste Awards for their turkeys!
Congratulations to Out and About Poultry, Harts Traditional Turkeys, Kelly Bronze Turkeys, Appledore Turkeys, Cottage Farms Ltd, and Walters Turkeys.
In total we now have approximately a third of our Golden Turkey Farmers with Great Taste Awards and three members Kelly Bronze (2011), Copas Turkeys (2016) and Temple Farm (2019) having gained the coveted 3 Star award and a finalist place for their Golden Fork award!
The recognition for fine quality and Great Taste came in September, along with our drive to encourage customers to purchase whole birds for best flavour on social media, taking part in NFU’s #buymyturkey campaign, and as a Food Hero for Love British Food’s British Food Fortnight! Our members using social media, reported being very busy, selling out earlier in 2020 than in previous years, with enquiries from new and local customers looking for best quality and to support high welfare farmers.
Although 2020 for many of our farmers meant working hard to adjust to new situations and challenges, this hard work and resourcefulness seems to have paid off, with many new customers this year enjoying (and now hopefully converted) to buying a Golden Turkey for Christmas!
Our farmers are now planning for Christmas 2021!
We look forward to highlighting our group of accredited farmers on social media throughout the year, providing customers with fantastic quality, naturally slow grown, free-range, artisan produced Golden Turkeys!
Golden Turkeys® are produced to the No.1 Independent growing standard for free-range Christmas turkeys!
